Theme parks

From high-speed slides to paddling and wave pools, theme parks present many disinfection challenges. There’s shallow water, fluctuating temperatures and pollution from bathers and many other environmental sources to deal with, plus elevated amounts of debris to filter out.

Spray from log flumes and other water rides adds the risk of legionella aerosols during hot summers, but fast forward a few months and it can be time for the winter shutdown which requires a completely different water treatment regime. Any solution must process very high-water volumes, be flexible enough to maintain the desired pH and residual chlorine levels year-round and also help to limit metal corrosion in water ride infrastructure.

Aquatic centres

With water slides and multiple pools of all shapes and sizes, large aquatic centres demand constant filtration and huge amounts of chlorinated water to cope safely with the number of customers using their facilities. But bather demand fluctuates widely and so does the pollution they produce, so a flexible, high-output chlorine generation system and continuous monitoring are essential to keep free chlorine levels bang on target.

Minimising corrosion in the mechanics of moveable pool floors is another concern for aquatic centres while reducing Disinfectant By-products (DBPs) such as chloramines and THMs is a particular issue for children’s water features and flumes. Municipal pools

Municipal facilities are smaller than aquatic centres but have the same disinfection goals: maintaining the correct pH and chlorine levels to prevent recreational water illnesses, control legionella and restrict algal growth. With limited staff, an easy-to-use, low maintenance disinfection system becomes even more important.

When many young children take swimming lessons or visit in large school groups, bather pollution can spike during short periods. Other user groups like canoe or scuba clubs add further sources of contamination, making control of DBPs a critical task.

Spas and wellness centres

Spas, hot tubs, jacuzzies or whirlpools, call them what you will, but their small water capacities, high temperatures and heavy bather loads make safely operating these mini pools particularly difficult.

Very warm water and aeration encourage fast bacterial growth, aided by pollution from oils, body treatments and the surrounding environment. Low water volumes mean the water circulates very quickly, so maintaining safe and clean water requires excellent filtration and consistently potent biocides.

Spas are often left to cool, either when unused or when the facility is closed. To help restrict the growth of legionella, they must also be drained and cleaned frequently under the HSE’s ACOP L8 regulations. That causes wide variations in water temperature and varying chlorination levels, posing further challenges for the disinfection system.
