How on-site technology is redefining safety and sustainability

Electrochlorination: The future of global water security

In an era where chemical security is paramount, the transportation, storage and potential misuse associated with chlorine handling, has galvanised a global shift towards safer alternatives.

Amongst the most promising solutions is electrochlorination, a technology that eliminates the need for hazardous chlorine gas by producing water treatment agents on-site and on-demand.

Gaffey Technical Services is already a leading pioneer in this process and driving change. Their Hyprolyser® iSEC® systems set new standards in efficiency, safety and environmental responsibility by generating non-hazardous <1% sodium hypochlorite on site using harmless salt, water and electricity.

The chlorine security challenge

Chlorine remains one of the most widely used chemicals in water treatment, yet from industrial accidents to potential weaponisation, the risks associated with bulk chlorine transportation and storage have led to stringent global regulations.

The World Chlorine Council (WCC) and the Global Congress on Chemical Security have long emphasised the need for safer alternatives, reducing the reliance on bulk storage and transport and, where appropriate, decentralising production.

Traditional methods, such as chlorine gas cylinders, liquid sodium hypochlorite and dry granular chlorine, require extensive logistics, posing risks to both workers and communities. In contrast, electrochlorination offers a sustainable alternative: making water safe when needed, without the use of harmful, hazardous chemicals.

Is electrochlorination the answer?

Electrochlorination is gaining rapid adoption in regions where safety and sustainability are critical. For instance, in Australia, rural communities are eliminating the risk of chlorine gas leaks by replacing outdated gas-based systems with Gaffey’s Hyprolyser® iSEC®-2.

The Hyprolyser® iSEC®-2 Modular system is ideal for smaller scale demands, generating chlorine at rates of 30, 60 and 90 g/h.  For example, this could be drinking water chlorination up to 1ML/day or a local town community pool.

The wall-mounted units are easy to install and provide precise brine and water proportioning, while automatic regulation of the iSEC® electrolyser’s DC current makes it extremely energy-efficient.

iSEC®-2 can maintain a highly consistent chlorine concentration in the generated product (av. 6g/l) for ultimate sustainability.

‘Small shires and remote hamlets no longer need to worry about hazardous chemical deliveries. The iSEC®-2 provides a self-sufficient solution.’

In May 2025, Gaffey Technical Services’ Managing Director, Phil Gaffey, travelled to meet with its distributors in Australia and New Zealand.

Once down-under, Phil shared the latest product developments in face-to-face meetings in Perth, W.A. with Senior Principal Engineer, Barrett Moulds of Water Corporation; Senior Associate Process Engineer, Cedric Gros of Jacobs; Senior Mechanical Engineer Nipuna Panditha of GHD; and Engineering Manager, Denny Denny of Centurion in the Asia Pacific region.

A ‘quick’ four-hour hop over to New Zealand, where Phil continued his electrochlorination crusade.

Once again, remote communities in New Zealand are realising the management of chlorine safety and security is essential to safeguarding its environmental assets and achieving long-term sustainability goals.

‘The ability to generate treatment agents on-site is a game-changer in risk management of safety and security.’

By producing a non-hazardous treatment agent at the point of use, it removes the dangers of transporting volatile chemicals while ensuring a continuous, reliable supply.

Why Hyprolyser® iSEC® stands out

Hyprolyser® iSEC® product range uses Adaptive Response Technology (ART), Gaffey’s automation software innovation that adjusts to fluctuating environmental conditions, salinity, temperature and pressure, ensuring a consistent, high-quality output with minimal operator intervention.

Gaffey’s Hyprolyser® iSEC® key advantages include:

  • Elimination of hazardous storage – no need for chlorine gas cylinders or bulk hypochlorite
  • Resilience in harsh environments – performs reliably even in extreme climates.
  • Lower carbon footprint – reduces transport emissions and chemical waste
  • Scalability – suitable for drinking water, industrial and leisure applications
  • Remote accessibility – real time event log and remote mimic monitoring for convenience and validation assurance

‘The iSEC® range aligns perfectly with modern water security priorities’

With its unique technologies, the Hyprolyser® iSEC® range is perfectly positioned as the go-to solution for a safe and sustainable water supply for food and beverage, as well as leisure, drinking and bathing.

Towards a safer future

As global regulations tighten and industries seek safer and greener solutions, electrochlorination is not simply an alternative – it’s becoming the only viable option.

Gaffey’s pioneering technology is already making waves across Australia, New Zealand and beyond, proving that secure, sustainable water treatment is achievable today.

Phil Gaffey sums it up: “The world is moving away from outdated methods; with the iSEC® range, we’re making this game-changing technology accessible on a global scale.”

For industries ready to embrace the next generation of water security, the answer is clear: electrochlorination is the smart and sustainable choice.
